Ingredient of The Week: Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)

What is Alpha Lipoic Acid?

​Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a coenzyme that is involved in many metabolic processes as well as acting as a powerful antioxidant. In fact, some refer to ALA as the “universal” antioxidant, due to it being both water- and fat-soluble. This allows it to protect a wider range of body systems.

Benefits:

​The body produces oxidants and free radicals as a result of stress and metabolism with oxygen. These free radicals can cause inflammation and cellular damage. ALA, being an ANTIoxidant, helps to repair and prevent some of this damage. Additionally, ALA has been noted to have positive impacts on fat loss as well as prevention of fat accumulation. It has been shown that ALA stimulates the activation of an enzyme called 5-adenosine monophosphate kinase (AMPK) in muscle tissue and fat, which in turn optimizes fat oxidation. ALA also inhibits AMPK activation in the brain, telling the body that there is an abundance of energy, causing appetite suppression. Finally, ALA has been shown to have an insulin mimicking effect, and shuttles glucose away from fat stores and to the muscle. This provides your muscles with more energy while also preventing additional glucose from being converted to fat. With benefits like this, it was a no brainer to add ALA to our fat burner, Ignite!

Possible Side Effects:

​ALA has been shown to be very safe and has no serious side effects.

Recommended Dose:

​Effective doses of ALA as an antioxidant and for fat loss have been shown to be between 200-600 mg.

When to Take:

​ALA can be taken any time throughout the day, but may be most beneficial for fat prevention if taken early in the morning or right before a meal. We have included a dose of 300 mg of ALA in Ignite, which we recommend to take 30 minutes before breakfast.
