29 Jun Ingredient of the Week: Alpha GPC
What is Alpha GPC?
Alpha Glycerylphosphorylcholine (Alpha GPC for short) is one of the most bioavailable sources of choline known in supplementation. Choline is used to create acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, that is important for proper neuro-muscular synchronization and firing. In addition to this, choline also boosts cognitive function and has been shown to possibly combat cognitive decline as we age.
Alpha GPC directly impacts the development of cell membranes in the cerebral cortex. For this reason, it has shown benefits such as increasing memory, attention span, focus, mental energy, and learning capacity. Due to its ability to raise acetylcholine levels, Alpha GPC also enhances physical performance via improved neuro-muscular coordination. It has also been shown to stimulate the pituitary gland, resulting in increased human growth hormone (HGH) production. This could lead to increased lean muscle mass and recovery.
Possible Side Effects:
Side effects from Alpha GPC supplementation have been few, and have generally been reported when dosages have been exceeded. The most common side effects reported have been mild headaches or dizziness.
Effective doses of Alpha GPC while avoiding possible headaches have been seen in the 200 – 500 mg range.
When to Take:
Alpha GPC can be taken and benefitted from throughout the day. With that being said, it is commonly used before workouts, given its ability to improve neuromuscular firing. Knowing that one of the most beneficial times to take it is before workouts, we added 300 mg of Alpha GPC to our preworkout, Genesis!
